Children Of The Grail

Traits Of Those Of The ‘Sangraal‘ Lines

THE CHILDREN OF THE GRAIL
…  …
Although ‘Children of the Grail’ are of all races and walks of life, there will always be that certain something about them – a presence or charisma that sets them off from everyone else. They may not be rich or formally college educated, but if they give you advice, or make a prediction or observation, they’ll be spot-on. There is a depth of wisdom and knowledge within them that eclipses many highly educated sorts.   They can be quiet and unassuming, but the successfully integrated, balanced and self-actualized Grail Child has an aura of an ancient warrior-sage about them, and even if they are very young, they will have wise old eyes that will see right into your soul.
It is difficult or even impossible to lie to them, because they can turn those ancient eyes on you, and strip the dishonesty right out of you. They have heard every lie, seen every scheme, done everything that there is to be done from the beginning of time. But they volunteered to return, with all those eons of wisdom and experience intact. This is an awesome responsibility, but those of the Grail bear it with grace and humor.
They do not suffer fools gladly, no matter who they are. Authority figures have to earn that authority, in the eyes of the Grail Children. There is an innate need to understand the motivation behind the collar, badge, robe, or other power symbol. Of course, this can lead to trouble with insecure authority figures, those who rely on their laurels or uniforms to exact obedience. To the Grail Children, this is living a lie, which is abhorrent to them.
In spite of the apparent cynicism, they also have an exceptional sense of humor, because they can see the absurd twists of cultural and social interaction. Its expression is rarely base or primitive- but often cynical or dry in expression. Grail children are more than capable of collapsing people in laughter with an offhand remark.
They also have a marked capacity for seeing the big picture or deeply viewing distant consequences, and this too can be a source of misunderstanding and difficulties for them.
The latent or not yet fully manifested Grail Children are often the result of harsh mistreatment or misunderstanding as youngsters, or being told over and over by parents and authorities that their visions had no meaning, or their sensitivities were fake, or worse, they are insane. The psychic pain of this malfunction of assimilation and actualization causes them to truly go mad, or turn to alcohol or drugs for comfort from the pain. With time and care, though, even these seemingly hopeless ones can find some measure of peace, get in touch with their gifts and potentials, and live to serve as they came here to serve.

The Grail and the Canine Conundrum

by Dan Green
Most of us at some point in our life have noticed that the word God, the Supreme and Infinite Personal Being, in reverse presents us with the word ‘dog’, man’s best friend. Given the importance of the title of our Creator, I could only wonder if they could be any significance in why the mirror imaging of the word should draw our attention to a contract drawn up between Man and dog, as remote as 10,000 years ago. Who was responsible for the naming of ‘God’, likewise who named the first dog? The plot thickens when we discover that the origin of both words is unclear, the exact history of the word God remaining unknown and the origin of dog tantalisingly one of the greater mysteries of English etymology having no known root in other languages. What might be the concealed connection? There are two possible ‘leakages’ within the religious spectrum. The first concerns St Dominic, founder of the Catholic order of Dominicans and, interestingly as we will see later, Patron Saint of astronomers.

St. Dominic and Dog
According to his mother whilst pregnant she saw in a dream a dog holding torch in its mouth that ‘seemed to set the earth on fire’. As in his name, the Latin version of the Dominican order is Dominicanus, or, ‘Domini Canus’ translating as ‘Dog of the Lord’. A second hint relates to Byzantine depictions showing the much venerated Catholic Saint St Christopher as dog headed.
Dog headed St Christopher
For me, the conundrum took on an even deeper adventure with the discovery in 2005 of a most unexpected image upon Christ’s platter at the scene of the Last Supper high up the stain glass Great East Window of Lincoln Cathedral, England which, owing to its small size, had gone unnoticed until the glass was inspected prior to cleaning.

Dog on the plate, Great East Window, Lincoln Cathedral
No loaf of bread or cup of wine on the plate as one would expect, instead a dog! This was the beginning of an amazing quest that is still vibrantly on going today, exposed as being allied to the global mystery of Rennes-le-Chateau with metaphors and symbology pertaining to ‘The Holy Grail’.
Additionally, along the Nave within the Cathedral, at a 15thc German woodcut of Jesus on his journey to Calvary, we see the same dog again, curiously and insouciantly apart from the scene and yet staring up at the oppressed Jesus.
Dog at the Station of the Cross, Lincoln Cathedral
Two books and one movie documentary later on the subject, I still find myself being led through the mechanism of synchronicity and the agency of the Collective Unconscious to discover more. It would have been fortuitous to have found the dog on the platter at Lincoln alone, but as the trail began to connect with the biblical figure of Mary Magdalene, I found another unexpected dog on stain glass, this time in France.
Church of Mary Magdalene, Beziers, France
Detail -  Dog at the feet of Mary
The church of the Grail entwined Mary Magdalene within the Languedoc town of Beziers in France has a significance in history, for it was here on the Feast Day of Mary Magdalene in 1209 that the entire village of its 20,000 Cathar stronghold were mercilessly wiped out in an act of genocide by the Catholic Church for the residents belief that Jesus and Mary were husband and wife.  Again, on stain glass, this time at the feet of the Virgin Mary we find a dog, cryptically connecting the church and its history with that of, Lincoln Cathedral. The dog is holding torch in its mouth, unmistakenly allying the image to St Dominic whose usual statues show him  with a dog holding a torch, as well as a star above his forehead for at the time of his baptism his godmother saw a star of extraordinary magnitude descend from the heavens to nestle there. Traditionally the origin of the rosary is accredited to Dominic when the Virgin Mary appeared to present him with it. From the Latin ‘rosarium’ it is not difficult to see its connection with ‘rosa’, the rose, symbol of Mary Magdalene and the Holy Grail.
In 2011, back in Lincoln at a Chapel in the General Hospital and led again by serendipity, I found another representation of a on looking dog in a biblical stain glass scene, this time of Joseph and Mary as she holds the baby Jesus.
Joseph and Mary with baby Jesus -  Lincoln County General Hospital Chapel
With these constant reappearances of a dog, what are we being told, and who is telling us? My understanding of the symbologies that are employed in religious icons, painting and sculptures, often going unnoticed as they are not expected to be there, is that they are the handiwork of the Collective Unconscious working through the unwittingly innocent artist or sculptor, it is as if Mind itself is ensuring the placing of them there to guarantee true accounts of events are never truly lost. That these anomalies often go without our recognition is explained by the neurological phenomenon called Scotoma. It is simple -  the brain only sees what it expects to see and bypasses what is actually there until it is pointed out at length. Perhaps the best known example of this returns us to the Last Supper where it went unnoticed for centuries in Da Vinci’s painting that the disciple John alongside Christ actually looked like a woman, for many now, a representation of Mary Magdalene.
The answer to why we are seeing this unexpected dog in Christly associated presentations, and why the word god in reverse is dog does appear to be emanating from the deep unconscious. Back in the early 90’s in the days when many of us where still using word processors and ribbon, my wife made an alarming discovery. Removing it from the machine, she took a look at my freshly discarded ribbon and within moments exclaimed to me, ‘Why have you put these messages in here?’ as she studied the sequence of words that obviously were viewed in reverse. Sure enough, in amongst the vast length of unwinding ribbon there were clear words and short sentences. How could I have created this, something that would have belonged more appropriately in a spy movie with its hidden script, let alone not notice? It was simply just the  reversed product of what I had written naturally and intentionally?
At that time I did not realise that I would not be alone in this phenomenon, which I now recognise as a bi-product of what is now referred to as the phenomenon of Reverse Speech – hidden backward messages in speech – discovered by Australian David John Oates during the 1980’s who announced that bi-level speech or language functions both backwards and reverse, giving numerous examples of how on reversed tape amidst obvious and expected of gibberish, intervals of short sentenced clear statements relating to the forward speech constantly appear as unconscious thought patterns. Futhermore, these words and messages is the unconscious and more truthful mind speaking correcting the inconsistencies – and deliberate lies – of conventional speech. In an email to me, David confirmed that god and dog are what he calls constant reversals, ‘They will always reverse to each other – I don’t document them when I hear them.’  Is it possible that ‘dog’ is an older lost word than ‘god’, and if so, where or what is the significance?
Outside of both a dog and, in a sense, Jesus being ‘Man’s best friend’, the  most famous of dog related instances is that of the brightest star in the heavens, Sirius, apparently given the appellation ‘The Dog Star’ as it is the chief body in the constellation of Canis Major, the Big Dog. If we read the word ‘canine’, like or pertaining to the dog, as the sounding ‘K9’ and translate’ K’ to be the  11th letter of the alphabet, and add the 9 to it, we total 20, the number of the Tarot card that is Judgement, and ‘Judgement Day’ is also known as The Day of Christ. Time now to embark (canine pun intended!) on a short paper chase investigating links to the word that designates the young offspring of a dog.  ‘Puppy’, a young dog , diminutive ‘pup’, from the App. French ‘poupee’ – a doll or puppet, Latin ‘pupa’. Pupa is a word referring to an intermediate stage of development in inveterbrates, an evolution, again from Latin ‘pupa’ which means ‘a girl or doll’. ‘Puppet’ comes from the Old French ‘poupette’ diminutive from Latin ‘pupa’. It seems that from puppy we have traced both doll and girl. Time now to look at a particular type of puppet, the marionette, its origin from the French diminutive of the name Marion, itself a diminutive of Mary, of Mary. By taking an investigation starting with puppy we have found a girl, Mary. Mary Magdalene?
The female of the dog, the bitch, is receptive for pregnancy when ‘in heat’, and Sirius the dog star and its origin ‘Seirios’ (containing both anagrams ‘rose’ , the symbol of the Magdalene, an ‘sire’ an animal term meaning to beget) means ‘scorching’ and to signify heat.
In Revelations 16:22, Jesus refers to himself as, ‘the bright and morning star’. Sirius, seven times brighter than any other star in the heavens is that very bright and morning star – if one knows where to look in the southern sky in spring it can be seen with the naked eye in broad sunshine.
Bright and Morning Dog Star Sirius
It is in perfect alignment with the star formation in the belt of Orion known as the ‘The Three Kings’, those of the Orient – more correctly ‘orientation’ – who followed the star of Bethlehem that led them to Christ’s birth place, the three stars representing the three Magi who traced him to his manger. Given this, it looks suspicious when we come across well known the phrase ‘A dog in a manger’, the accepted explanation for the expression meaning someone who has something of value that they cannot or will not use themselves but which they won’t let anybody else have either…the secret of a connection with Sirius, of which the five pointed blazing star, that blazing ‘torch,’ can be seen in every Masonic Lodge, and surely the same star associated with the Dog Lord Dominic?
Is the Collective Unconscious telling us that Sirius in some way is responsible for the birth and evolution of the human race? The origin of the word ‘doll’ which we found earlier, is another classic unknown which I  have found to belong to the word ‘model’, the original pattern and design of the human race. If Sirius is in some way an Erik Von Daniken style substitute for our understanding of God’s creation of mankind, it would make sense of the name of the tribe, the Dogon of Southern Mali, when reversed – ‘No god’ – for it was this primitive African tribe who first learned precise astronomical understanding of Sirius from their ancestors, centuries before modern day astronomers finally made their own discoveries that embarrassingly confirmed those of the Dogon. Radio astronomy has proven to us that the iron content of the star Sirius is the same as the iron in our blood and the iron of the earth and of our solar system.

Sirius And The Grail

An artist's impression of Sirius A and Sirius ...
Interestingly enough this article was posted on the original website on November 24th 2011, my 30th birthday. 3 = 3’s and 0’s, such as 300 or 330 – God and the ascended masters are trying to get your attention, most likely with respect to a matter related to your Divine purpose. Is there any guidance that you’ve been ignoring lately? If so, you may be feeling stuck right now. This number sequence is heaven’s way of alerting you to the fact that you must do your part in the co-creation process. This means listening to and following your Divine guidance to take certain actions. —Doreen Virtue

The Knights Templar and the Real Holy Grail

The Holy Grail As Code

Early on, while doing research for my novel The Templars Two Kings and a Pope, I was mystified by the recurrent mention of the Holy Grail in documents referring to the Knights Templar. It didn't make sense; by then I had defined that the core of the Templars, those who gave direction to the Order were without doubt Gnostic mystics who gave little importance to relics or anything in the material world, which they considered an illusion, something to be dismissed.
In those days of persecution by Church inquisitors, non-traditional Christians had to hide their practice and find secret codes to communicate. This could be something as innocuous as drawing a cross with all four legs the same size, this meant Gnostic balance, or a star of David which meant the coming together of male and female in all of us. When you met someone whom you thought might be a fellow Gnostic, you started with a salutation, "Beauseant". If they knew what it meant, then you casually drew a cross on the ground with your sword or a stick. They would probably respond by drawing a Star of David or a dove. Then you knew you were safe and could talk freely.
So with all of these secret codes, if a chalice stood for something else, what would it be? It definitely was not the cup that Jesus used in the last supper. This would mean nothing to those mystics, an actual cup?

The Symbol For The Heart

When I dug deeper, I found that starting even earlier, perhaps back to the 5th century, the Heart, that is the spiritual heart as opposed to the human organ, was symbolized by a drinking vessel. Catholics are familiar with paintings of The Sacred Heart of Jesus, so we know that there was veneration for Jesus' Heart. The Gnostic Gospels refer consistently to the Heart of Christ that will open in all of us. David Richo in The Sacred Heart of the World makes the definite connection between the symbol of a cup and the heart of Jesus.
It's obvious that in the symbol of the cup, or Holy Grail, the Templars were referring to something that was a direct connection to the Heart of Jesus. If we take into account how revolutionary Jesus’ message of love was in relation to the harsh tone of Judaism, then it stands to reason that it is this singular aspect of his teachings that identified him as a vessel of love, ergo his Heart. Elaine Pagels in her Gnostic Gospels tells us that Jesus gave secret instruction, what became known as Gnosticism, to the select few, and spoke in parables to the general public. These teachings were banned by the Church starting in the 5th century, but for those who knew of them, they would embody the essence of Jesus, his love, his Heart. If we put all the facts together, and add that Jesus was a Rabbi, a well-educated man who spoke and wrote in at least Greek and Aramaic, and he wanted to propagate his teachings, it stands to reason that he must have committed them to writing.. Then it makes sense that a document written by Jesus would be what the Templars were hiding as the Holy Grail; Jesus’ Heart.
So what happened to the "real Holy Grail", a gospel written by Jesus? That was a line of inquiry I pursued in my novel. I found evidence that it was a real document, the actual words of Jesus written by his own hand. The Brotherhood kept it as a treasure for many centuries, after they found it, very likely in the place and manner similar to what I describe in my novel.

The Saga of the Templars’ Real Holy Grail

The Templars’ Real Holy Grail has been sought after, secreted away, possibly destroyed, only to surface again in the mysterious labyrinth of Christendom intrigue.
The legends point to the existence of a Holy Grail. Historical evidence defines it as a Gnostic Gospel written by Jesus. But where has it been all these centuries?
It is unknown to how many of his twelve disciples Jesus imparted his secret teachings, but what survives today as the Gnostic Gospels, what was found in a cave in Egypt in 1947 and is known as the Naj Hammadi library, contain the writings of Mary Magdalene and Thomas.
But why then wasn’t there a gospel written by Jesus as well? If he wrote something, wouldn’t there be at least references to such a document? Among the Gnostic Gospels there is one called the Gospel of the Savior, but no one knows who the author is as yet. Whatever the case might be about that document, wouldn’t a gospel written by Jesus been singled out and heralded through the centuries? Well, not if it started out as a secret document by the author himself, giving very specific instructions that it cannot be disseminated. Jesus meant his secret teachings for those who were ready, and these were few and far between. To the masses he spoke in parables, to the minds with limited understanding that could not conceive of God residing inside them. He knew that should his teachings be made public, they would be grossly misinterpreted, and indeed they were. People were burned at the stake in the Middle Ages for claiming that they had God inside them. If such a document had made its way to Church officials, in all probability they would have either destroyed it or hidden it, for the same reason that it was so valuable to the Brotherhood, the secret Gnostic organization behind the Templars: it validated Gnosticism as Jesus’ true teachings while doing away with the Church’s reason for being, the whole notion that one can only reach God and salvation through its priests, teachings and liturgy.

The Initial Discovery of the Real Holy Grail

The first instance that the real Holy Grail surfaced was shortly after the founding of the Templar Order in 1119. The nine Gnostic knights who founded the order, almost immediately started digging around Solomon’s Temple where they were headquartered. In due course they stopped digging and made their way to Rome where they exacted huge concessions from the pontiff that guaranteed the viability of their new order. Historians have speculated as to what it was that they found that they could use to sway the pope. The Temple of Solomon had contained the legendary Ark of the Covenant, but the chances that it was still around after all those centuries would be unlikely, given that the Temple had been destroyed and rebuilt several times, and even then, its possession would not have given such a powerful bargaining position to the Templars. What would have done it, would be a Jesus Gospel that if made public, would have meant the end of the Church’s role as intermediary. But did they find it under the Temple? Not likely. Through the centuries the place had been just too much of a target, not a good hiding place for anything of value. It’s far more likely that the nine Gnostic Templars were after something buried near the Temple. What stood next to the Temple of Solomon in Jesus’ time was the Antonia Fortress, the Roman’s administrative center that had also housed a jail where Jesus had been held before being crucified. Several Roman jails had cells dug into the ground. It is then possible that Jesus’ cell could have survived. But why would it hold anything so valuable and who put it there and why?
When studying mystics, it pays to think like one.
In The Templars Two Kings and a Pope, William and Hughes are also after the Jesus Gospel. They are instructed to find Jesus' cell where he meditated and prayed for long hours, because this is the only place left where his essence has been left relatively undisturbed. They make the journey and imbue themselves with Jesus’ essence that leads them to where his gospel was hidden. This line of reasoning would have made perfect sense to a mystic of the time. For centuries, before embarking on a pilgrimage it was customary to seek the essence of the saint one wanted to reach through the pilgrimage. I believe this is what the nine Templars were after; they found Jesus’ cell, and in due course they found where the gospel was hidden. To us this whole process would seem like magical thinking, but in those days that’s how things worked, how people thought and acted, and is the process I applied in the novel given that I was writing about medieval Templars.
At any rate, by however process and means, it was found.

The Real Holy Grail and the Cathars

After the nine Templars originally found it, the next time the gospel surfaced was almost a century and a half later, on March 25, 1244, when the Cathar castle of Montsegur in the Languedoc region of France fell to the pope’s army. Legend has it that a handful of Cathars (who were Gnostics) within the Castle took the Holy Grail with them before the castle fell.
It makes sense that the Templars loaned the Gospel to other Gnostics. After all, it validated their faith as the true teachings of Jesus, and it was probably passed around from one group to another.

The Original Real Holy Grail Vs. Copies

The next time we hear about the real Holy Grail, it’s back in Templar hands, that is their Brotherhood, and they make it to Scotland with it.
My theory is that these were copies, not the original. Even before medieval times, copies signed by reputable scribes were considered just as good as the original. In fact, it was necessary to make copies to safeguard the original. Anyone with a blade for scraping and a quill could make changes to a document, but copies made by reputable scribes was a way to safeguard the integrity of the text. The original in Jesus’ actual handwriting would have been treasured in a sacred place, much as the Ark of the Covenant had been because of its mystical rather than practical value.
In the novel, the gospel has to be a copy, for it came from the Library of Alexandria. For centuries the scribes at the library copied every document they came across. The law said that any ship containing books, or any traveler who came into the city had to surrender their books for copying. This is how the library became the foremost depository of knowledge in the Empire. In the article The Holy Grail’s Hiding Place (below), I describe how and why several copies made it from Alexandria to the depository called Hafiz Mountain in the Tibesti Mountains, in present day Chad. The Templars in the novel go after one of these copies because they know that their time in the Holy Land is running out as the Turks are about to expel all Christian armies.
It’s quite conceivable that the copy that the original Templars found in 1120, the one at Montsegnur in 1244 and the one the Templars took to Scotland in 1307, were all different copies; but I doubt it, you couldn’t have anything so potentially dangerous loose. Someone could alter the writing and make it say something different, and then the other copies would have to come to the surface to correct the falsehood, probably resulting in their destruction. There was probably one copy always guarded by Templars who had orders to destroy it if necessary.
My thought is that the copy found by the original nine Templars was the same as the one at Montsegur, and this one copy was destroyed before it fell into enemy hands. The Brotherhood decided at this point to leave the remaining copies where they were, safe in their original hiding place, the Hafiz Mountain in the novel, a very likely real depository for the Gospel and the other books from the Library of Alexandria.
It is at Hafiz Mountain that the Templars in the novel find a copy of the Gospel. This is one of several instances in the book where fiction approximates what really happened. The rest of the novel, the impact that the Gospel had on the Brotherhood, what they had to do to protect it, and how it shaped history, is very real.

The Holy Grail's Hiding Place

The legend of the Holy Grail was born during the romantic era in the early middle ages; an era that gave birth to the concept of courtly love, gallantry, and the forbidden love that one was willing to die for. Many songs and poems were composed at the time by traveling minstrels, most having to do with beautiful damsels, but some with great adventures and treasures, such as the Holy Grail. During the middle ages they thought that it all started with King Arthur and his court, but actually it was the middle ages that gave birth to the Arthurian myth…yet another product of the romantic era.

The Hiding of the Holy Grail

However, we are talking about the real Holy Grail, a document. Where was it hidden all those centuries before the Templars found it? I concluded that in the same place where the bulk of the books from the Library of Alexandria were secreted to after Christian hordes started destroying everything that was not the approved Bible. According to what the Arabs recorded, monks who had been in charge of the library took their books to a secret location where they were translated into Arabic and disseminated throughout the Arab world, back in 421, two centuries before the Prophet Mohammed, when Emperor Constantine made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. That’s also the time when the Gnostic Gospels were buried, what was found in 1947 in a cave in Egypt and became known as the Naj-Hammadi Library, the finding that revolutionized our knowledge of Jesus’ teachings. Dr. Pagels’s book, The Gnostic Gospels is based on her study of these documents. Unfortunately there was no gospel written by Jesus among them, but this was to be expected, since Jesus meant for readership to be restricted to the very select few.
A thesis in my novel is that the monks at the Library of Alexandria had the secret Jesus Gospel. The reasoning is simple; Alexandria was not only the cultural center of the Empire, it was also its most progressive city, where Jesus learned what became his Gnosticism, from Buddhists. Buddhism did have an impact in the city where intellectual inquiry was the norm, where most of the greatest learned men came. So yes, it makes sense that whoever was in charge of the library would reflect the city’s culture, and the biggest, most complete library in all of the Roman Empire, ran by mystical Christian monks, would certainly have copies of Jesus’ document. Just the fact that they wanted to save the knowledge in their hands by handing it over to the Arabs speaks volumes about what they were like.
So where did the Library of Alexandria monks take their books including the Jesus Gospel? I placed myself in their place, studying what was known about the world at the time and what was happening around them. As fanatical Christian hordes started descending on the library to destroy its contents, the monks had to act fast. They looked for a safe place that was well away from invaders and fanatical hordes, and in a direction away from danger. To achieve this, from Alexandria you would have to look due west, towards what was then known as the Libyan wilderness, basically the western-most chunk of Africa that encompasses most of the Sahara. Well, fortunately for them, and for me, someone else had escaped in that direction centuries before, with a similar goal in mind, to find a safe haven away from violence, in this case, an invading army. These were the mystics who left Judea and Israel during the Assyrian invasion in 722 BCE and founded a colony hidden away in the Tibesti Mountains in what is today’s Chad. For well over two millennia this was a place known to the mystical underground, a place where one could find sanctuary away from so-called civilization, a place to pray and meditate in peace.
Looking at a map of that time, the Tibesti Mountains made perfect sense. In fact, it would have been hard to pass up. It is hard to get to, one has to cross many miles of desert, but once in the mountains there are valleys with 20 inches of rain a year, plenty to support a colony. No other location offered relative proximity, safe passage, habitability, and the promise of a peaceful life.
I figured that the place had a name, a code name that would not give away its location. In the novel I called it Hafiz Mountain, because Hafiz in Arabic means to preserve knowledge, as in writing, memorizing, or secreting it away, and I figured that’s what the mystical underground and then the Brotherhood would have called it, or something very similar.
In the book, the document is found and taken away to Europe by the Brotherhood. Centuries prior another copy was very likely found by the nine Templars who founded the Order, only to be lost. This time it made sense to keep the remaining copies safe until the last minute, because possession of such a document was so dangerous. In any case, the Holy Grail made its way to Europe, I believe in a manner very close to what I describe in The Templars Two Kings and a Pope.
A review concerning the Holy Grail for “The Templars, Two Kings and a Pope”
“This novel is the real quest for the Holy Grail. I have a great deal of personal knowledge about this subject matter from decades of research into my family connections to the Templars. Gnosis is the core “secret” and the true treasure that The Brotherhood protected with their lives.”

The Holy Grail

The Holy Grail is the drinking vessel that was quested by The Knights of The Round Table. The word is derived from the Old French word grael, which means a dish.

The Holy Grail of Christian legend is the vessel given by Christ to his disciples to sup from at the Last Supper.

Later, it is said to have been given to his grand-uncle, St. Joseph of Arimathea, who used to collect Christ's blood and sweat whilst he hung upon the Cross.

Sometime after the Resurrection, Joseph was imprisoned in a rock tomb similar to the one he had given for the body of his Jesus. Left to starve, he was sustained by the power of the Grail which provided him all he sustenance for living.

Many years later, in around 63AD, St. Joseph journeyed to Britain with his family and several followers.

He settled at Ynys Witrin or Glastonbury, and there the Grail stayed. Later the Grail was taken to Corbenic where it was placed in a castle, to be guarded always by the Grail Kings, who were themselves the descendants of Joseph's daughter, Anna (Enygeus) and her husband, Brons.

Centuries later, by the time of King Arthur, the location of the great castle of Corbenic was forgotten.

But at his court, it was prophesied that the Grail would one day be rediscovered by a descendant of St. Joseph. This knight who would discover it would needs be the best knight in the land. What is more, he would be the only man capable of sitting in the mysterious Siege Perilous seat at the Round Table. Such a man arrived in the form of Galahad, the son of Lancelot.

As reward for his purity of heart, he was granted a miraculous, though brief, vision of the Grail itself. Once he relayed his story, the quest to find this holiest of relics began. Through many adventures and many years, the Knights of the Round Table crossed Britain from one end to another in their search.

There are many other stories of their travels. Perceval or Peredyr discovered the castle in a land that was sickly like its spear-wounded King. When entertained by this Fisher King or Grail King, however, the knights failed to ask of the Grail and left without it.

In another legend, Lancelot reached Corbenic, but was prevented from entering because of he was an adulterer.

Finally Galahad arrived. He and he alone was thus permitted to enter into the Grail Chapel. There he gazed upon the wondrous sight. His life became complete and together Grail and knight ascended in to heaven. And there are earlier traditions of a grail that link healing with holiness, and Celtic and ancient British notions of fertility and kingliness.

The earliest legends of the grail is seen as being something which can be brought to heal the land, when the Maimed King has become wounded in the thigh. The emphasis upon a wounding to the king's thigh appears to have been originally a fertility story. Once his powers are restored, the king gives life to the land. While the king is well, the land is well. The thigh is a symbol for fertility; In ancient society, the wounded fertility of the king leads to a wounded land. The waste land is still a metaphor for us today.

Stories of a sacred vessel or cauldron were dear to the Celts. Such legends seem to have became entwined with the story of the Christian Holy Grail.

The search for the Grail has inspired countless Quests and crusades across England and Europe to find it. The film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is a fairly recent re-telling of this popular quest.

The first stories similar to our popular ideas about the Arthurian quest for the Holy Grail, come from Chrétien de Troyes. He was aware of a Celtic oral traditions of the Grail, which he probably received from the Bretons of Brittany, who knew well about old legends from Britain, but he also incorporated a Christian mission to the story.

From the 14th Century it was said that the Grail was the cup of the Last Supper, and had had been brought to Glastonbury by Joseph of Arimathea. King Arthur, the Christian king, inspires his knights to seek this wondrous vessel through aspiring to complete holiness and spiritual bravery.

In finding the Cup which contained the Blood of Christ, the knights would yet again bring healing and life to the world. Different stories, say different knights found or saw the Grail. According to the Queste, it was Sir Galahad who found the Holy Grail. After Sir Galahad's death, a hand carried the Grail to Heaven.

The Holy Grail first appears as simply 'a grail' in the works of Chrétien de Troyes. The word is probably derived from the Old French word graal meaning a "broad and capacious dish or salver". Though usually thought of as being a cup or chalice, the Grail has indeed been variously described as a platter, dish, a cornucopia, and a horn of plenty.

The name of the Castle of Corbenic has several possible explanations. It could come from the Old Welsh cors, meaning 'horn' as in The Horn of Plenty.

The Grail is sometimes confused with the Old French corps or 'body'. More likely, however, is the suggestion that Corbenic stems from the Latin Corbin-Vicus. The ending is almost certainly derived from the Latin for 'settlement' or 'town' while Corben is a French translation of the word 'crow' or 'raven' which is Bran in Welsh.

This was also a man's name and, as Brons, he may be or be descended from St. Joseph's son-in-law, who was one of the first Grail Kings. Hence Corbenic might be Bran's Settlement. Finally, it may be linked to the home of Lancelot's father, Caer-Benwick. To this day the meaning is still by no means certain.

The Grail Quest has taken a new and interesting lease of life through the enormous success of the novel and film The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.

The characters in the story investigate the 'sang real' or royal bloodline from Jesus and Mary Magdalene, and their supposed son. This royal bloodline is revealed to all who watch the film or read the book to be Jesus and Mary's living descendents. The true meaning of the grail is thus shown to be not a chalice, but a bloodline - which the Roman Catholic Church has spent two thousand years covering up.

Even though our name of the Grail appears to be quite late in origin, the quest for a divine vessel was a popular and re-occurring theme in Arthurian legend long before medieval writers introduced the Holy Grail to British mythology. The quest for the sacred cup appears in the Mabinogion tale of Culhwch and Olwen. More well-known is the story of the Preiddeu Annwfn or Spoils of the Otherworld as recounted by Taliesin. In this legend, King Arthur and his knights sail to the Celtic Otherworld to capture the pearl-rimmed Cauldron of Annwfn.

Like the Grail it was a source of sustenance and a giver of plenty, and also of the gift of prophecy. It was finally discovered at Caer-Siddi (or Wydyr), an island bound castle of glass, where it was guarded by nine holy maidens. But the ensuing perils to gain the grail were too much for even King Arthur's men. The mission was abandoned and only seven of their number returned home.

Cauldrons were used in ceremonial feasting as early as the Late Bronze Age. Ritual deposits in Llyn Fawr (Glamorgan, Wales) included such vessels, though the best known example is the Gundestrup Cauldron found in the peat bogs of Jutland, in Denmark.

Highly decorated with portraits of many deities, this vessel would once have held up to twenty-eight and a half gallons of liquid. These finds clearly point to the religious importance of cauldrons, as found in the Arthurian stories and even older Celtic mythological parallels.

The magic Otherworld or Underworld vessel was the Cauldron of Ceridwen, the Celtic Goddess of Inspiration. She is possibly the source for our own idea today of the cauldron-stirring witch. According to legend, she once set about brewing a drink of knowledge and wisdom for her hideous son to make him all-knowing. But, without her knowledge, the kitchen-boy, Gwion, accidentally tasted the concoction, which drew out all of the magic from the brew, and thus prevented anyone else from benefiting from its affects, her own son included.

The story now turns upon the great battle of wills which ensued between Goddess and kitchen-boy, for Gwion now held the knowledge he needed to escape even from a Goddess' wrath. In a struggle to outwit one another, the two changed themselves into various animals and things. But Gwion's luck ran out when he became a grain of wheat only to be swallowed whole by Ceridwen. Centuries later, the poor kitchen-boy was eventually reborn as the great bard, Taliesin.

The cauldron then reappears in the story of Bran Fendigaid or Bran the Blessed, as a vessel of knowledge and plenty, and also of rebirth. The great Celtic warrior God, Bran, obtained his life-giving vessel from a giantess, possibly Ceridwen, who had been expelled from a lake in Ireland. The Emerald Isle is a personification, in this legendry tale, of the Celtic Otherworld. This magic vessel could restore to life the body of any dead warrior placed within it: a similar scene is possibly depicted on the Gundestrup Cauldron.

The story continues with Bran's sister marrying the King of Ireland, and they are given the cauldron as a wedding gift by Bran. However, when hostilities break out between the two kingdoms, Bran travels across the sea to regain this wonderful, yet dangerous gift. He is eventually successful, but is wounded by a poisoned spear and, like King Arthur, only seven of his men return home. So even this story may link back to St Joseph of Arimathea. For Bran is possibly Brons, the Grail King, and son-in-law of St Joseph of Arimathea.
